Wilikisa- Zhukwe Action Team has once again managed to lobby community members to support the construction of an additional classroom block at Wilikisa Primary School which will benefit over a 100 children in the community.
The Action Team with the help of the community has molded about 30000 bricks to be used to complete the structure which is currently at foundation level.
Action Team vice Organising Secretary Sibongile Makwati said, “We have asked community members to contribute $20 per household to buy 40 bags of cement so that we can finish the foundation. Once the foundation is down we will ask for some more contributions to finish the block.”
The community mobilized resources to build the first classroom block and two teacher’s cottages in the previous years after realising that their children were walking long distances to get to the nearest schools.
In 2010 the community managed to construct the first classroom block, toilets and teachers cottage to enhance access to education in the area.
This is quite an encouraging initiative by this community.

Yes they are really committed to increasing access to education in their community. They are also planning to take on the construction of a ward clinic once the classroom block is finished.

Education unlocks so many opportunities, this is an amazing initiative that will go a long way to encourage other communities to take part in such initiatives.

True that. Many children in rural communities are learning under trees or in sub-standard infrastructure, some of them walk over 10km just to reach those centres.
